Preaching Tips and Tricks

Here’s three quick preaching tips.

1.  Mention something early in the message, and bring it back  towards the end.  Comedians are masters of this.

2.  A random fact every now and then will make you seem more believable to your audience.  Quote a statistic reference something odd from history, even in passing.  Don’t do this too much, or you’ll just come across as a know-it-all.

3.  When make you make a serious point, pause and let it sink in.  The pause is a powerful tool.  Too many times, speakers move on to the next thing, when a pause would drive the point home better.

  1. You can tell a joke, but it has to be relevant. Nothing turns me off to a speaker more than a joke just for the sake of telling a joke.

  2. Think of a sermon like a 30 minute story. The story should have an overarching theme and all of your points should relate in some way to that theme. If you aren’t a funny person don’t tell jokes, if you aren’t a buttoned up academic then don’t try and dig deep into the original translations. People love to see you be you during a sermon. The pastor’s that preach best are those that are themselves.
