Major Themes in Luke
During The Jesus Series, we’re walking through the book of Luke and looking at the life of Jesus. Remember, the book of Luke is one of four accounts of the life of Christ (the other’s being Matthew, Mark and John). Here’s some of the major themes of the book of Luke.
- The sovereign rule of God over history. Luke connects the events of the day to prophecy, showing that Jesus is the promised Messiah.
- The kingdom of God. It’s mentioned 40 times in Luke. Though the Kingdom of God is already realized in the book of Luke, there’s some future element to it as well.
- The Holy Spirit (referenced more than in Mark or Matthew). The Holy Spirit’s presence is the single most distinctive mark of the Christian. In fact, Cornelius possession of the spirit served as proof to others that he really was a Christian.
- The Great reversal. In the Gospel of Luke, you see a great concern for the poor, tax collectors, sinners, Gentiles and women. Truly, the first shall be last and the last shall be first.
- A call to salvation. Luke invites us enter the kingdom of God,, inherit eternal life, and receive forgiveness of sins. These are not various ways to aquire salvation, but various ways to describe it. Luke traces Jesus’ Geneology back to Adam to show that he is the hope for all people and Luke 2:10 says that good news has appeared for all people.
